Before I signed up for [Fitter After 40] I had resigned myself to just being “okay” with gaining weight and not being able to lose it during menopause, that this would be my new normal. During the course I was pleasantly surprised to find that increasing my protein and staying in a deficit was not nearly as hard as I thought- and I wasn’t hungry! I never felt deprived of anything. I've now lost over 20 pounds and 23 inches! I went from being able to do zero push ups to doing 15 in a row! What’s even better is how these changes have rippled out into my family, especially my three teens. Everyone is making healthier food choices and moving their bodies.

I started [Fitter After 40] in September feeling tired, out of shape, & thinking that my clean eating habits had little room for improvement. 8 weeks later I have more energy, I can lift heavier weight than before, & I realized that my previous focus on clean eating was setting me up for failure, an unhealthy relationship with food & also made me gain weight over the years as I didn't think about the impact of calories...Now  I've lost 12.5 inches on my body & feel extremely motivated to continue to workout & get stronger. During Covid my sitting time & calorie intake increased significantly. Stress eating is my forte & having food within my home/workspace at all hours didn't help. I had been working out with weights & loving it as well as following people on IG who coached about macros, but let's be honest...I was guessing.  Determining my calorie deficit & protein needs was enlightening.  I had been a person that had always dropped to significantly low calories; I would white knuckle my way through the diet & then not know what to do afterwards to maintain the results. With this program, I was so excited to see my calorie range knowing I could enjoy more food- I love food!   I learned about making “nutritional compromises” that would fit within my calories so I could still enjoy my life & not feel deprived.  As a baseball mom, I included french fries, hamburgers and hotdogs into my 8 week plan and still saw results. Over 6 pounds and 12 inches lost! However, the greatest accomplishment is actually in what I’ve gained: the confidence in believing I can continue & sustain this change.

In addition to midlife weight, I had put on an additional 10 pounds during quarantine life.  I was the heaviest I had ever been, and I felt in a very deep rut. I was having lower back pain, not sleeping well, & having a hard time getting up off the floor (to reach low shelves, for example. The course has helped me tremendously in the past 2 months. I have learned (still work in progress) to disassociate my mood and my inner mean girl, from the number on the scale.  I have changed my sleep patterns:  I have set a bedtime and a routine and I try to adhere to it.  This routine has helped me notice a pattern between my appetite and lack of sleep.  I had a big “win” one day when I used the knowledge about sleeping to anticipate the challenges of the day. Instead of giving in to binge impulses, I made every effort to eat well, and get in my steps. The end of the day felt like a victory. It was a real “aha” moment. The most surprising learning aspect of the past two months has been how the program has empowered me and made strength training so accessible to me. I have felt myself getting stronger each week and I have a sense of wonder of what my body can do for me.  And I've lost 10 pounds!

I've always had a love/hate relationship with food and my weight. After I had kids I lost & gained the same 10-15 pounds. During the pandemic, when it first started I started drinking too much wine, eating too much banana bread and I wasn't looking good or feeling good. I joined [Fitter After 40] because the tips & tricks that used to work for me before menopause weren't working anymore. I've lost 11 pounds and 12 inches. In my 58th year on the planet, I felt like I had lost autonomy over my body, that the effects of menopause were burdens written in my DNA. I had been piling up a mountain of excuses as to why I should continue eating a big, self-soothing bag of potato chips every night and wear maternity yoga pants every day, forever!   Over the past nine weeks I have shed self-doubt along with inches and pounds.
